Boyd Pollock homers, David Hutchins pitches complete game as Deerfield-Windsor beats Valwood 5-1

ALBANY — Locked in a one-run game late, Deerfield-Windsor exploded in the sixth inning behind Boyd Pollock’s two-run homer and a flawless complete-game effort from David Hutchins to power past Valwood, 5-1, in a key region clash Tuesday night.

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth when Collins Clark led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hutchins. Gabe Tomlinson followed with a triple to the left-field fence to score Clark and break the tie, and Brantley Michlig then lined a single to center to bring in Tomlinson.

One out later, Pollock belted a high fly ball over the right-field fence and into the street, pushing the Knights’ lead to 5-1.

Hutchins, who allowed just four hits in the game, walked the first batter in the top of the seventh. Head Coach Kyle Keen walked to the mound for a brief chat but left Hutchins in the game. The junior right-hander responded by inducing three consecutive fly-ball outs to end it. He walked two and struck out five.

The win moves Deerfield-Windsor to 14-5-1 overall and 5-2 in region play. Valwood now trails the Knights by one game in the region standings. The two teams will meet again Friday in Valdosta.
