The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Mike Soroka on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a right shoulder strain.
The move is retroactive to May 14. Left-hander Max Fried has been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move and will start Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Atlanta believes Soroka will be ready to make his next start despite the injury, according to MLB.com.
Soroka, one of the Braves’ top pitching prospects, made his major league debut against the New York Mets on May 1, allowing one run in six quality innings to earn the win. He hasn’t made it through five innings in two starts since, exiting his last outing against the Miami Marlins on Saturday after allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Overall, Soroka, 20, is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in three starts for the Braves.
Fried, also considered one of the top pitching prospects in Atlanta’s organization, will make his first start this season on Thursday. He has pitched in four games for the Braves out of the bullpen, allowing four runs on five hits — including three home runs — in six innings and striking out seven.
Fried, 24, has been starting in the minors with Gwinnett, where he has a 3.60 ERA in three starts.
