Brookwood Warriors take two over Deerfield-Windsor

ALBANY – Brookwood’s (12-1) stifling defense and sharp three-point shooting handed Deerfield-Windsor (10-1) its first loss of the season, 50-24, in a clash of teams with stellar records. Brookwood’s girls also secured a win, holding off a Deerfield-Windsor rally for a 49-37 victory and completing the sweep for the Warriors.

The Knights started strong in the boys’ game, opening with an 8-1 run, but Brookwood responded with three consecutive three-pointers to tie the game at 10. Deerfield-Windsor regained a 15-12 lead after a steal and layup by David Hutchins, but the Warriors closed the first half with a 10-point run to take a 22-15 advantage.

Brookwood’s zone defense, anchored by 6’9” senior Walker Jackson, stymied Deerfield-Windsor’s offense. The Knights struggled to penetrate the paint and couldn’t connect consistently from long range, making just three three-pointers the entire game. Brookwood led 28-17 at halftime and limited the Knights to only seven points in the second half.

Mason Johnson led Deerfield-Windsor with eight points. Freshman Thomas Lee hit four three-pointers and scored 14 points to lead Brookwood, while Jackson added 13 points, and Jordyn Jean contributed 10.

In the girls’ game, Brookwood came out firing, hitting eight three-pointers in the first quarter to build a commanding 26-8 lead. Despite trailing 35-20 at halftime, the Lady Knights mounted a spirited comeback. Using a man-to-man full-court press, Deerfield-Windsor created scoring opportunities. Hampton Rushton’s jumper late in the third quarter narrowed the deficit to 40-35, and Tamia Brown’s free throws brought the Lady Knights within three early in the fourth.

However, Deerfield-Windsor’s scoring dried up from there, as Brookwood closed the game with a 9-0 run to secure the 49-37 win. Rushton led Deerfield-Windsor with 12 points, while Harper Coleman added nine. Brookwood’s Ainsley Jacobson scored 17 points, and Carriyona Williams chipped in 14.

Deerfield-Windsor will look to rebound Tuesday when they travel to Dawson for a region matchup against rival Terrell Academy. The Lady Eagles of Terrell Academy enter the game with an 11-0 record, while the boys’ team is 7-4.
