Capps gets fourth consecutive NHRA Funny Car win

Ron Capps continued his domination of NHRA’s Funny Car division Sunday by winning his fourth consecutive event, this time taking the Heartland Nationals in Topeka, Kan.

Capps won a close head-to-head final-round battle with Matt Hagan, 3.924 seconds to 3.985 seconds. Capps previously won races in Baytown, Texas, Charlotte and Atlanta.

Capps won the 54th event of his career, all but one in this division.

Antron Brown stopped Steve Torrence’s two-race winning streak in Top Fuel with his second win of the season. The race was close, with Brown’s 1,000-foot time 3.709 seconds to Torrence’s 3.836 seconds.

Brown won his 64th career event.

Tanner Gray secured the Pro Stock title when Jeg Coughlin launched too early. Gray’s elapsed time was 5.511 seconds at 210.87 mph. The victory was Gray’s second of the season.

The weather slowed qualifying to one round, but Robert Hight was still able to set a new Funny Car speed record. His pass of 337.66 mph broke the mark set by Hagan (335.57 mph). Torrence (Top Fuel) and Bo Butner (Pro Stock) were the other category top qualifiers.
