DWS boys win 14th straight region title, while girls win for 13th time

ALBANY — Deerfield Windsor took top honors at the Georgia Independent Schools Association Region 3-AAA boys and girls track & field meet Wednesday at Hugh Mills Stadium.

The Deerfield boys won their 14th straight region championship, while the Lady Knights won region for the 13th time.

The Knights got off to a quick start in the field events. John Collier Logan and Cameron McCook took first- and second-place finishes respectively in the shot put. The same duo then took two of the top three spots in the discus with Logan again taking first, while McCook took third.

John Jacobs captured the long jump and the triple jump. Baylin Moore finished third in the long jump

In the pole vault, Jackson Tennyson finished second to Southland’s Brody Shattles. In the high jump, Jackson Hinds took second and Oliver Davis took third.

In running events, Ethan Merrit was the high-point leader, contributing 25.5 points. Merritt took home first in the 800 meters, 1600 and 3200. He ran a 4:38 in the 1600 to break his own school record.

Other standout performances were Porter Hill finishing second in both the 3200 and the 1600, Evan Campbell finishing second in the 300-meter hurdles, Ford Bennett finishing second to Merritt in the 800, Brynn Sammons winning the 400 and finishing third in the 200, Reynolds Langstaff placing third in the 400 and Garrett Jones taking third and fourth in 100 and 200 respectively.

The Lady Knights had an equally impressive start with Lila Lanier winning the high jump at 5-feet, 1-inch as well as finishing third in the 200.

Hadley Holt, who took home the high-point award for girls, won the long jump, the triple jump and the 300-meter hurdles as well as adding points in both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.

Sarah Cox’s pole vault height of 9-6 was enough to give her a first-place finish with Raley Holman (2nd in shot), Virginia Warrington (3rd in discus) and Deena Willcox (2nd in pole vault) all finishing on the podium.

In running events, the Lady Knights finished one, two in the 3200 with Camryn Bridges and Flannery Daughtry at the front of the field. Bridges also finished third in both the 800 and the 1600.

Destiny Reed finished first in the 200 and second in the 100, while Charlotte Augenstein took home first in the 400. Carson Chandler also contributed on the podium with a second place to Holt in the 300-meter hurdles.

The 4×100 team of Holt, Reed, Cox and Anna Eakes also took home first place.
