MACON — The Deerfield-Windsor boys tennis team finished as the state runner-up in the Georgia Independent Schools Association state tennis tournament this week at the John Drew Tennis Complex.
The Knights, the second seed from Region 3-AAA, played Region 1 champion Heritage, getting wins from No. 3 singles player Bo Williams as well as both doubles teams (Tyler Lowe/Porter Hill; Reed Reynolds/Fletcher Cromartie) to advance to the semifinals.
Deerfield-Windsor then defeated Augusta Prep, getting victories by Cohen Bonner at No. 2 singles as well as both doubles teams to earn a trip to the finals where they fell to region foe Brookwood to finish as the state runner-up.
The Lady Knights defeated Weber to advance to the state semifinals before falling to Westminster of Augusta 3-2.
The state individual tournament was held earlier in the week on Monday and Tuesday. Deerfield-Windsor’s Sarah Perrine was a No. 3 seed in girls singles, while Gabby Pinnero and Lilia Sullivan qualified for the tournament as the Region 3 No. 1 doubles team, while Westwood’s Callie Smith and McKenlee Coleman were the No. 2 seed.
Smith and Coleman defeated Pinnero and Sullivan to win the state doubles crown.
On the boys side, Deerfield’s Brandon O’Brien made the tournament in singles play as a No. 4 seed, while Westwood’s doubles team of Brock Allen and Cameron Godwin were the region’s top seed, while Lowe and Hill were No. 3 and DWS’ Cromartie and Reynolds were No. 4.
Brookwood’s Thomas Harrison won the state singles title.
