Deerfield-Windsor staves off Terrell Academy
Knights hold on for 42-28 victory

ALBANY — The clock on the scoreboard was blank but Jack Kimbrel knew what he needed to do.
The Deerfield-Windsor quarterback had no visible clock as part of scoreboard was out after Hurricane Hermine drenched Webb Memorial Stadium in rain, but Kimbrel led the Knights on a late drive that was capped by a three-yard Cameron McCook touchdown to give the Knights a 42-28 victory over Terrell Academy Friday night in a nonregion game.
“It was a little tricky to bleed the clock, not knowing exactly how much time was left,” Deerfield-Windsor coach Allen Lowe said. “We were really just trying to milk the clock all game.”
The Knights (2-2) led 35-28 in the fourth quarter when cornerback Jake Shepherd ended Terrell Academy’s attempt to tie with an interception.
Shepherd’s play set Deerfield up for what would be the game-clinching drive.
The Knights brought the lumber on the first drive, registering two sacks and setting the tone for what would be a hard-hitting affair.
On their first possession, Deerfield got the ball with a short field after a bad punt and immediately made the Eagles pay. Jack Kimbrel found John Collier Logan on a 21-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0.
After the Knights took the lead, Terrell embarked on a near nine-minute drive on its second possession to tie the game up 7. The Eagles scored on a 10-yard keeper by quarterback Reese Bell, who barely made it into the end zone.
DWS doubled their score early in the second quarter when Howell Logan found the end zone on an eight-yard touchdown run.
The Howell Logan show continued throughout the second. The senior came down with an interception after Bell threw behind his wide receiver. Logan capitalized on his own forced turnover when he came in at quarterback and scored on a two-yard run to make it 21-7.
“He is just a tough football player,” Lowe said. “He brings a toughness and an edge that we need. He is going to have to continue to do that and hopefully the rest of our team responds.”
The Knights used another interception, this one by Cooper Roberts, to add to their score and make 28-7 after Garrett Jones found the end zone from five yards out.
Just when it looked like it would be a blowout, the Eagles gained some life. Zeb Waters made it 28-14 with a 62-yard run and just before halftime, Bell found William Chambless for a 12-yard touchdown pass to cut the score to 28-21.
Chambless’ touchdown reception was set up by a Deerfield fumble.
The Eagles tied the game at 28 early in the fourth quarter. The score came courtesy of a 19-yard run by Bell that saw him spin and juke multiple defenders before finding the end zone.
“I’m very proud of our kids,” Terrell coach Bill Murdock said. “They tried and they gave it a great effort, we just came up a little bit short.”
After watching a once large lead evaporate, the Knights struggled to solve the Terrell defense until midway through the fourth. Jones capped a long drive with a five-yard touchdown run to make it 35-28.
