Deerfield-Windsor sweeps region track & field meet
Knights, Lady Knights roll to victories
By Nolan Imsande
ALBANY — Deerfield-Windsor completed a sweep in the Georgia Independent School Association Region 3-AAA track and field meet Wednesday afternoon at Hugh Mills Stadium.
The Lady Knights earned a first-place finish by putting up a whopping 216 points. They more than doubled the second-place finisher, which was Westwood. The Lady Wildcats finished with 87 points.
The Deerfield boys victory was much closer. The Knights put up 149.5 points and edged out Southland by 15.5 points for first place. Southland jumped out to a lead after two events but when the Knights caught them, they never relinquished it.
The DWS boys used a strong performance in the field events to help build a lead. Cameron McCook took first in the shot put and third in discus, Trey Young finished third in the high jump, Charles Crosby came in second in the long jump and Holt Jones was second in discus.
“We probably exceeded our expectations,” Deerfield-Windsor boys coach Craig Rhodes said. “We ran better than we were seeded. On paper, I think we were second. But you don’t lose it on paper and you don’t win it on paper. We did a lot better than most people thought that we would.”
The DWS girls put together a strong performance. The Lady Knights won almost every running event including the 4×400 meter relay and 4×100 meter relay.
Deerfield’s Tara Young was the high point finisher with 35 points. She won the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash.
The Lady Knights put together a complete performance that made head coach Allen Lowe smile.
“I thought our girls had a great day,” Lowe said. “It is all about us running the best times that we have and I thought today that we did that.”
Rhodes and his team received a bit of a scare toward the end of the meet when Trey Young grabbed at his thigh and went down. He was carted off and looked at by the trainers. The state track and field meet is two weeks away.
“Hopefully we can get him back,” Rhodes said. “We need him. He’s a senior and he’s a veteran track guy. He’s the anchor on our 4×100 relay team. It would be important for us to get him back if we can.”
Terrell Academy’s Ross Hunter won the boys high jump event. Hunter cleared 6 feet, 1 inch but is confident he can do better.
“My knee started acting up from an injury a few years ago,” he said. “I was just trying to do my best to compete. I want to go higher because I only have two more meets left.”
If Hunter wins the high jump at the state meet, he would become a four-time state champion.
“I just wanna jump as high as I can,” Hunter said. “I would like to have just another good year before I graduate and enjoy it.”
