Deerfield Windsor sweeps region track titles

ALBANY — The Deerfield-Windsor Knights and Lady Knights swept both Region 3-AAA championships Wednesday at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Deerfield Lady Knights came out in first with 158 team points ahead of Brookwood who finished second with 57 points. The Knights rolled up 140 points with Southland coming in second with 99 points.
Out of 16 events in competition Wednesday, the Deerfield-Windsor Lady Knights took first place in 13 of those events. Charlotte Augenstein won three of those events — the 800 meter, the 1,600 meter and the 3,200 meter runs. Cassandra Lopez won the 100 meter dash and finished second in the 200 just behind Brookwood’s Ella Grace Squires. Deerfield’s Catherine Peacock finished third in that race.
Peacock finished second in the 400 meter dash, right behind her teammate Hadley Holt who won by 0.4 of a second. In the hurdles, Deena Wilcox took first place in the 300 meter hurdles and Sara Beth Royal of Tift Area Academy took first in the 100 hurdles. The Lady Knights’ Kate Williams finished third in the 100 hurdles.
The Lady Knights swept both the 4×100 relays and the 4×400 relays and Deena Wilson won the pole vault.
In other field events, Lila Lanier won the high jump, Hadley Holt won the triple jump and the long jump. Virginia Warrington won the discus throw and Vakwood’s Mary Claire Martin won the shot put. Deerfield-Windsor’s Jamia Lofton took second place in the shot put.
The Knights were not quite as dominant as the Lady Knights but still took home first place in nine of the 16 events.
The speed events — the quick dashes — went to Valwood’s Jaheim Jones who won both the 100 and 200 dashes. Nathan Duke of Southland won the 400, edging out Deerfield-Windsor’s Jonathan Willis (2nd) and Gleaton Jones (3rd).
Ford Bennett beat teammate Porter Hill to win the 800, but Hill turned around and beat Bennett to win the 1,600 race. Hill also won the 3,200 for the Knights, beating teammate Graham Ford, who finished second.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Jackson Tennyson won for the Knights and Bennett Carey won the 300 meter hurdles for Southland. Deerfield-Windsor’s Bo Bennett finished third.
The Knights won the 4×400 relay race and took second in the 4×100 relay.’
In field events, Jackson Tennyson and Jame Tennyson finished first and second for the Knights in the Pole Vault. Parker Jones won the triple jump and John Collier Logan won both the shot put and discus for the Knights. William Fox finished third in the shot put for Deerfield-Windsor and John Branch was fifth in the discus.
Brookwood’s Kurtis Brown took first place in the high jump, edging Deerfield-Windsor’s Jonathan Willis. In the long jump Clay Owens and Caleb Law of Southland took first and second. Deerfield-Windsor’s Lawson Gill finished fifth for the Knights.
The Knights and Lady Knights will now compete for state honors at the end of April.
