ALBANY – The Deerfield-Windsor boys and girls basketball teams opened their Christmas Classic, sponsored by Southwest Oral Surgery, Monday with big wins in their first games. The Knights belted Southwest Georgia Academy 69-32 and the Lady Knights followed with a 63-34 win over Fitzgerald.

The Knights (3-2) opened the game with a swarming defense that led to a 9-0 lead for Deerfield-Windsor but the Warriors called time and battled back to tie the game 9-9. Moments later freshman Lane Sceals swished his second three-pointer of the game to give the Knights a lead they never lost. After being tied 9-9, Deerfield-Windsor went on a 26-2 run, capped by a Jack Moore three-pointer. Hays Revell swished another three to put the Knights ahead 43-13 at the half and the game was out of reach for the Warriors.

Jackson Harris led the scoring for the Knights with 17 points, Sceals put in 14, Mason Johnson scored 13 and Revell followed with 12.

The Lady Knights (5-0) jumped on Fitzgerald (2-4) quickly. Gabrielle Harris drilled a three from the top of the key to begin the scoring and before the Purple Hurricanes knew what was happening, Deerfield-Windsor was up 16-0. Fitzgerald was down 34-16 at the half but closed the gap to 10 at one point in the third quarter before the Lady Knight offense opened up again.

Fitzgerald had no answer for Deerfield-Windsor senior Margaret Sadler who put in 20 points to lead the team. Murphey Ray scored 12, Harris knocked in 11 and Joi Hubbard added nine for the winners.

The Knights are scheduled to play Westwood Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. while the Lady Knights will play the final game at 6 p.m. against the No. 10-ranked Monroe Golden Tornadoes.
