Dougherty to host Lee County Tuesday, travel to Monroe Saturday
By Joe Whitfield
Last weekend basketball was scarce in Albany as Monroe and Deerfield Windsor were off and Westover and Dougherty played in Columbus. This week there is plenty of hardcourt action to find including two rivalry games.
The big local game Tuesday evening will be another Trojan war atDougherty County High School when the Trojans (3-3) will tangle with the Lee County Trojans (3-2). Dougherty is coming in after a split weekend when they blew out Columbus on Friday 70-43 but then lost a close battle in Columbus to Hardaway 62-56. Dougherty’s Trojans have been led so far this season by Rod Jones who is averaging 17 points per game and Eric Gulley with a 12 point average. The Lee County Trojans are being led so far by two guards Javion Johnson with 22 points per game and Jeremiah Engram who is averaging 16 points per game. Johnson did not play in Saturday night’s loss to Americus Sumter, and though he has played in a couple of games, Engram is still sharing his time and talent with the Trojan football team.
Dougherty’s Lady Trojans (2-4) also split their weekend games by beating Columbus 51-45 and losing to Hardaway 66-42. Zetambria Hall has built a 12.7 per game scoring average to lead Dougherty and Jana Lee is close behind with 10.7 points per game. Lee’s Lady Trojans are 2-4 after beating Americus Sumter in a close game Saturday evening. Sophomore Jakailyn Poole leads Lee with 11 points and seven rebounds per game and freshman Monique Judge is next with nine points per game.
The Westover Patriots (0-3) lost 59-55 to Northside of Columbus and are off Tuesday night. Friday night will travel back to Columbus to face Shaw High School then host a Saturday night showdown with rival Monroe here in Albany. While the Westover boys haven’t picked up their first win of the year, the Lady Patriots have started out 3-0 after trouncing Northside 66-23.
Monroe has Tuesday night off as well, then will face Terrell County Friday before the rivalry game Saturday with Westover.
In GISA, the Deerfield Windsor Knights have enjoyed a week off after the Brookwood Turkey Day Shootout, but will travel to Perry to face Westfield on Tuesday and then to Camilla Friday night to take on Westwood. Former Deerfield Windsor head coach Gordy Gruhl, who is the new head coach at Westwood, will face his former school for the first time.
Also hitting the hardcourt this week, Byne Baptist (4-1) travels to Hampton to face Bible Baptist Tuesday, then has a big rivalry game with Open Baptist in Valdosta Friday.
Sherwood Christian will have its first home game of the year Tuesday evening. The Eagles have traveled for their first five games and will now host Southwest Georgia tonight.
