FLOWERY BRANCH — Former Georgia running back Cash Jones’ first stint in the NFL has come to an end, at least for now.
The Atlanta Falcons released Jones from their practice squad Tuesday after signing former Alabama running back Jam Miller. The moves amounted to a swap of rookie running backs with strong ties to the SEC.
Jones joined the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in May following five seasons at Georgia. The former walk-on from Brock, Texas, developed into a dependable reserve running back, receiver and special-teams contributor for the Bulldogs.
He made a strong bid for a roster spot during the preseason, particularly in Atlanta’s 34-6 victory over Indianapolis. Jones finished that game with 103 yards from scrimmage, rushing seven times for 41 yards and catching four passes for 62 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown.
Jones totaled 53 rushing yards and 69 receiving yards over Atlanta’s three preseason games. The Falcons waived him during their final roster cuts before bringing him back as a member of the practice squad. He remained there through the first four games of the regular season but was not elevated to the active roster.
At Georgia, Jones grew from an undersized walk-on into a versatile contributor and member of two national championship teams. Among his memorable moments were a 25-yard touchdown reception in the Bulldogs’ eight-overtime victory over Georgia Tech in 2024 and the recovery of a surprise onside kick against Texas in 2025.
Miller was selected by New England in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. The Tyler, Texas, native appeared in 43 games at Alabama, rushing for 1,661 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 40 receptions for 336 yards and two scores.
Jones is now free to sign with another NFL team’s active roster or practice squad.
