Chicago White Sox reliever Danny Farquhar was discharged from RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago on Monday afternoon and should eventually be able to resume his MLB career, the team announced.
Farquhar, 31, is recovering from multiple surgeries for a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm suffered while he was sitting in the dugout during an April 20 game against the Houston Astros. He spent more than a week in intensive care but is now resting at home with his family.
According to the team, Farquhar’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Demetrius Lopes, expects the right-hander to be able to pitch again at some point in the future, though Farquhar will not play again in 2018.
The White Sox have displayed Farquhar’s jersey in the bullpen or dugout during every game since the incident. Former teammates Logan Morrison and Jake Odorizzi — who played with Farquhar on the Tampa Bay Rays and are now on the Minnesota Twins — visited Farquhar at the hospital on Friday and were impressed by his progress.
“I was really, really blown away, impressed, surprised by how well he’s doing,”‘ Morrison said. “Walking around, talking, doing great.”
“Everything out of that situation couldn’t have unfolded better from what we saw today,” Odorizzi added. “It was the normal Farquhar with just a scar on his head. You take the scar away, he’s the same guy he’s always been, so pretty miraculous turnaround considering it’s been two weeks.”
Farquhar has pitched in parts of seven MLB seasons for the Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, Rays and White Sox, posting a career ERA of 3.93.
