CAIRO, Ga. – The Dougherty County School System has launched an administrative inquiry after a fight erupted at the end of the  Cairo-Westover game at Cairo High School Friday night.  A local television reporter told her station that an assistant Westover coach struck a Cario athlete and caused the brawl.

The game had been contentious with at least two technical fouls and it ended with a tied score. The game’s outcome was crucial to both teams in the race to host the upcoming region tournament and Cairo is now in the top sport following the 77-74 overtime win.

WALB sports reporter Janrye Cooper was at the game and reported that a player told her the fight began as the players shook hands after the game and one of the Westover coaches swung at one of the Cairo players. A brawl ensued and law enforcement officers used pepper spray to end the fight. No injuries were reported but Cooper did report that the pepper spray caused some fans to vomit and experience other issues.

Dougherty County Schools Superintendent Kenneth Dyer and Westover Principal William Chunn have been informed of the situation and a statement from Dougherty County Schools reads in part, “appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against any individual found to have been an active participant in this unfortunate incident.”“We are disappointed at what transpired after the game. We pride ourselves on exhibiting good sportsmanship and have made that a clear expectation of our student-athletes coaches. Anyone who failed to meet those expectations Friday night will be addressed accordingly.”
