Florida State forward Phil Cofer learned Friday that the NCAA has granted his request for an extra season of eligibility.

Cofer had requested a medical hardship season due to his 2015-16 campaign being ended after 11 games due to a foot injury.

“I am happy to announce that I will be returning to Florida State’s basketball team next season,” Cofer announced on the Florida State basketball team’s Twitter account. “I have been working hard, on and off the court, to prepare for another incredible season. I can’t wait to put the Florida State uniform back on.”

Cofer averaged 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds last season while helping the Seminoles reach the Elite Eight for the first time in 25 years. He was the only Florida State player to start all 35 games.

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton was happy with the NCAA decision.

“Those of us who have known Phil Cofer over the year realize the type of outstanding young man that he is. He’s a Seminole through and through. He’s a special kind of person,” Hamilton said. “For him to have the opportunity to continue his development and growth after going through those two years of chronic injuries, for the NCAA to give him this opportunity is what they’re supposed to all be about.”
