Friday Night Five: Hurst’s near-perfect night helps Baconton Charter make history

BACONTON — Baconton Charter has never had a football season quite like this one.

And Preston Hurst had a lot to do with making history Friday night.

The junior quarterback completed 11 of 12 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns as the Blazers beat Terrell Academy 28-21, improving to 5-1 and setting a program record for victories in a season.

Hurst’s near-perfect performance also earned him Albany Herald Friday Night Five Player of the Week honors.

Five wins may not sound extraordinary for some programs. For Baconton Charter, it represents another milestone in a season that has quickly become the best in school history. The Blazers have won four straight and, with games still remaining, already have more victories than any Baconton Charter football team before them.

Hurst was remarkably efficient in getting them there.

He completed 91.7% of his passes and averaged more than 20 yards per attempt against Terrell Academy. Seven of his completions went to Kayden Logue, who piled up 161 receiving yards and a touchdown. Ziroc West caught three passes for 82 yards, with two of those catches going for touchdowns.

That means 10 of Hurst’s 11 completions went to Logue or West, and the duo accounted for 243 of his 244 passing yards.

For a program enjoying unprecedented success, Hurst delivered one of the most efficient quarterback performances of the season at exactly the right time.
