The defenses were good, the quarterbacks were better and a couple of Southwest Georgia runners seemed to find the end zone every time they touched the football.

Here’s a look back at Friday night:

Lee County 15, Coffee 6

Coffee entered Friday night unbeaten, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A and eager to end years of frustration against its Region 2 rival.

Lee County’s defense sent the Trojans home frustrated again.

The fourth-ranked Trojans held Coffee to 203 total yards and scored a touchdown of their own when Trey Bush scooped up a fumble and raced 63 yards to the end zone. Jordan Bush supplied Lee County’s offensive touchdown and rushed for 66 yards on 21 carries. Cohen Lawson completed 12 of 18 passes for 102 yards, finding Jaden Upshaw seven times for 59 yards and Carter Blackwell three times for 43. Lee County has now beaten Coffee eight consecutive times, including the 2017 state championship game, and will host Veterans on Friday in Leesburg.

Dougherty 45, Shaw 0

Micah Joyner did just about everything but throw himself the football Friday night.

The Dougherty sophomore completed 12 of 13 passes for 271 yards and five touchdowns as the Trojans dismantled Shaw 45-0 in Columbus. David Burgess caught three passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns, while Melvin Williams turned his two receptions into 87 yards and two more scores. Morris Hill rushed for 87 yards on 11 carries, and Joyner added 53 yards on five attempts. Dougherty is 5-1 overall, 4-0 in region play and off this week before welcoming No. 4 Cairo to Hugh Mills Stadium for a game that could shape the region race.

Southwest Georgia Academy 54, Sherwood Christian 22

Southwest Georgia Academy arrived at Legacy Field with a straightforward plan: run the football until Sherwood Christian proved it could stop it.

The Warriors never had much reason to change course.

SGA scored five first-half touchdowns and carried a 40-8 lead into halftime on its way to a 54-22 victory. Sherwood freshman quarterback Brandon Hemmings continued to flash his potential, completing 12 of 20 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Hunter Gregg had 103 receiving yards and a touchdown, Dyson Harris added 81 yards and a 70-yard score, and CJ Grier finished with 63 yards and a touchdown.

Terrell Academy 48, Central Fellowship 7

Bryse Peachey touched the football six times as a runner Friday night and reached the end zone on five of them.

That’s about as efficient as it gets.

The senior quarterback rushed for 191 yards and five touchdowns as Terrell Academy ran away from Central Fellowship 48-7 in Dawson. Walt Lee did plenty of damage, too, carrying 10 times for 106 yards and a touchdown. Grant Suber and Cole Bridges led the defense with six tackles apiece. The 2-3 Eagles now turn their attention to Friday night’s rivalry game at Deerfield-Windsor in Albany.

Mitchell County 68, Atkinson County 0

Mitchell County didn’t need long to settle this one.

The Eagles erupted for 46 first-quarter points and cruised past Atkinson County 68-0 in Camilla. Montorie Lee needed only seven carries to rush for 133 yards and five touchdowns—one score for every 1.4 attempts. Jadarian Hudson completed 3 of 4 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns, both to King Grissom, who finished with 112 receiving yards. Mitchell County improved to 5-1 and will face a much stiffer test Friday when it travels to Clinch County.
