Tony Romo’s PGA Tour debut came to a quick and ugly conclusion.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL broadcaster shot a 10-over-par 82 on Friday and missed the cut at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship by 16 shots in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Romo, playing as an amateur on a sponsors’ exemption, came in last place in the 132-player field at 15-over-par 159.

Brice Garnett, the first-round leader, remains on top at the midway point of the event at 13-under 131 following a 4-under 68 on Friday. He is one shot in front of Steve Wheatcroft and Keith Mitchell, who both shot 6 under in the second round.

Romo, teeing off on the back nine, got off to a horrible start Friday with bogeys on each of his first six holes. He added double bogeys at No. 18 and No. 2, then sandwiched his only two birdies of the day around another double bogey at No. 5.

“I got off to a rough start,” Romo said, according to PGATour.com. “I lipped out some short putts that kind of got me almost a little bit pressing. I just didn’t hit the irons very good today. The back nine is 4,000-some yards, so when you’re not hitting those (putts) well you’re going to have tough shots. I was short-sided a few times, made too many mistakes. So a lot of stuff to learn from, and in a good way.”

Despite the result, Romo was glad he came.

“I think more than anything having a chance to play out here shows your weaknesses and your strengths and the stuff you have to go work on,” he said. “I’m hitting the ball fine, you just have to score.”

Garnett, a 34-year-old Missouri native, is looking for his first PGA Tour win in his 88th event. He has four career top-10 finishes, never higher than sixth, and his best result this season was a tie for 17th in the Safeway Open.

Garnett enjoyed a hot stretch early Friday — four birdies and a par from No. 3 to No. 7 — but otherwise made par on every hole.

Both Mitchell and Wheatcroft played second rounds that included six birdies and no bogeys.
