Georgia Southwestern basketball sweeps Albany State
GSW women prevail in overtime, while Albany State men remain winless

AMERICUS — Georgia Southwestern claimed a pair of close basketball victories in a matinee doubleheader Tuesday, with the men winning 78-71 and the women prevailing 101-97 in overtime.
In the men’s game, winless Albany State trailed by 16 with less than eight minutes to go but went on a 15-2 run to make it a three-point game with 2:36 to go on Michael Green’s 3-pointer. GSW’s Dajion Macklien answered with a 3-pointer of his own with 1:43 to go, and Albany State was unable to pull back into a one-possession game.
Devin Watson and Andre Statam each scored 17 for GSW (3-1), with Hasaan Buggs scoring 13 and Quenten Taylor adding 12. Rahdin Hughes led ASU (0-12) with 15 points, with Green adding 11.
GSW’s Tyisha Moore sent the women’s game to overtime by hitting 1-of-2 free throws with no time on the clock, then the Hurricanes’ Mariya Trimble and Shanya Jones made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 11 seconds of overtime to put things away.
Trimble led GSW (4-1) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Gabby Figgers scored 17 points, Moore 16 points and Amanda Melosky 13 points.
Five players scored in double-figures for ASU (5-7), with Kayla Green and Ashley Johnson each scoring 16 points. Shantrell Holland and Tyra Thompson each scored 15, while Elesha Foster had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
