Georgia Tech extended the contract of coach Paul Johnson through the 2022 season, the school announced Friday.
The move comes with Johnson having three years left on his current deal.
“Aside from Bobby Dodd, no head coach in Georgia Tech football history has won more games in his first 10 seasons than Paul Johnson,” athletic director Todd Stansbury said in a statement. “By extending Coach Johnson’s contract through 2022, we not only keep one of the most successful coaches in our illustrious history right here on The Flats, but we also ensure continued stability within our coaching staff.”
Johnson is 75-54 in his 10 seasons on campus and has guided the program to eight bowl appearances. However, the Yellow Jackets have experienced losing campaigns in two of the past three seasons, including a 5-6 mark last season.
The legendary Dodd won 82 games in his first 10 seasons at Georgia Tech. The College Football Hall of Famer won a school-record 165 from 1945-66. Johnson stands fourth on the school’s win list.
Johnson was appreciative of the latest show of support.
“The first thing that most potential student-athletes want to know is ‘Who is my coach going to be?,'” Johnson said in a statement. “So it’s good for our program and what we want to achieve to be able to tell recruits that the head coach is signed through 2022.”
