Georgia Tech’s Aidan Birr earns Groza award again

THE FLATS – After making history in Saturday’s 30-29 overtime win at Wake Forest, Georgia Tech place kicker Aidan Birr (Kennedale, Texas/Kennedale H.S.) has been named one of three Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week. The Lou Groza Award Stars of the Week recognize college football’s top kickers.

Birr’s latest national honor comes after he went 6-for-6 (three field goals, three PATs) in the No. 16/17-ranked Yellow Jackets’ one-point victory at Wake, which kept Tech unbeaten at 5-0 (2-0 ACC).

For the second time in three weeks, Birr’s performance was highlighted by he and the Jackets executing a late-game “Toro” field goal, a 33-yarder with two seconds left in regulation that sent the contest to overtime knotted at 23-23. Like his 55-yard game-winner against Clemson on Sept. 13, Birr drilled the game-tying field goal against Wake Forest despite Georgia Tech having to take the field and get lined up without the benefit of a timeout.

The redshirt junior also made field goals from 35 and 19 yards to move to 10-for-10 on the season and 42-for-51 in his career. In the process, he became the first player in Georgia Tech history to make 40 field goals within the first 50 attempts of his career (40-of-49). He also raised his career field goal percentage to .824, which is by far the best percentage in Tech history by a player with at least 20 attempts (second-best is .732).

A member of the official watch list for the 2025 Lou Groza Award, this is the second time this season that Birr has been tabbed as one of the award’s Stars of the Week. He also earned the honor after hitting the game-winner against Clemson.
