For Worth County head coach Will Smith, part of the fun of the past month or so has been watching a young team develop.

The Rams, who are fielding a roster heavy on freshman and sophomore players, have gone 10-2 in their past 12 games, including a series victory over Crisp County in which it wrapped up second place in GHSA Region 1-3A.

Now Worth County (18-8) is set to enter postseason play. The Rams are scheduled to host Brantley County in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.

“You try to peak at the end of the year,” Smith said. “Bottom line, we’re playing well right now. There’s a lot of youth out there getting a lot of experience in exciting games that have been getting that heart racing. They’re having to handle nerves, and hopefully it will pay off.”

A forecast of afternoon storms Thursday convinced the participating teams to delay their series a day. They will now begin their best-of-three set with a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday, with the third game, if needed, scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Brantley County, the No. 3 team from Region 2-3A, enters with a 12-17 record. The winner meets the Peach County-Southeast Bulloch winner in the second round.

The forecast, which calls for a 95 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms in the Albany area during the 3 p.m. hour Thursday, hasn’t affected the scheduling of Lee County’s Class 6A series against Richmond Hill. That series, weather permitting, is still slated for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader start Thursday, with Game 3 set for Friday.

Also scheduled for Thursday afternoon, weather permitting, is Monroe’s Class 3A doubleheader at Appling County and Pelham’s Class 1A-Public series at GMC.

Region 1-1A champion Baconton Charter drew a first-round bye and will host the Miller County-Jenkins County winner in the second round.
