Girl Power Classic: Dougherty’s defense gives Lady Trojans win over Thomas County Central
The Dougherty Lady Trojans won the opening game of Thursday’s “Girl Power Classic” at Lee County High School.
LEESBURG — A relentless fourth-quarter full-court press, spearheaded by the Simmons sisters, lifted the Dougherty Lady Trojans to a 59-53 victory over Thomas County Central in the opening game of the Lee County “Girl Power” Classic on Thursday afternoon at Lee County High School.
D’Asia Simmons ignited the rally with a key defensive play, stealing the ball and racing for a layup to tie the game at 50-50 with 2:14 remaining. Moments later, teammate Jatiana Chambers swiped another steal and delivered a perfect assist to Dariona Simmons, who scored to give Dougherty a lead they would not relinquish.

The Lady Trojans dominated the first half, building a 29-19 advantage by halftime. However, the Lady Jackets roared back in the third quarter, outscoring Dougherty 21-11 to tie the game heading into the final period. Thomas County Central briefly grabbed the lead early in the fourth, but Dougherty’s smothering defense and timely scoring secured the win.
Chambers led the Lady Trojans with 17 points, followed by D’Asia Simmons with 15 and Grace Smith with nine. Jaden Crews paced the Lady Jackets with a game-high 18 points.
