Lee County played a nailbiter of a baseball playoff series with Greenbrier on Thursday, but the defending GHSA Class 6A runner-up Trojans saw their season come to an end with a pair of one-run losses.

Greenbrier, the 2015 Class 5A champion, posted a pair of quick runs in Game 1 that stood up for a 2-1 win. Later, Lee County rallied in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings, but Greenbrier had the final answer in an 5-4, eight-inning victory.

Matthew Chester’s double put Greenbrier on the board in the first inning of Game 1, with Chester later scoring on an error. From there, Greenbrier pitcher Bryce Melear shut Lee County down, scattering six hits while striking out six and walking one.

Jacob Barwick had an RBI single for Lee County in the second inning. Layne Wiard took the loss, striking out five.

Jonathan Logsdon’s two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh in Game 2 kept Lee County alive in Game 2. The game went into extra innings after the Trojans worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam, but Greenbrier won on an error, a walk and a Jackson Rosier base hit after Lee County went quietly in the top of the eighth.

Hill Corley went 2-for-3 in Game 2, with Wiard picking up a double. Logan Goff took the loss in relief.

Lee County finished with a 24-9 record.
