High School Roundup : Santos sets school record to lead Lady Cats past SGA

Senior Abby Santos set a new school record with the most 3-point shots in a game Tuesday night in Damascus to lead the Westwood Lady Cats to a big 74-31 win over Southwest Georgia Academy. Santos hit 10 three-pointers and scored a total of 33 points- her career best. Gracie Pollock scored 18 and pulled down 10 rebounds while Karlie Jones added 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. The win improved the Lady Cats’ record to 19-3 overall.
In the boys’ game, Southwest Georgia Academy jumped out to an early lead and led 34-17 at the half, eventually winning 61-42. Tyler Marshall led the Warriors with 24 points, Brooks Mathis scored 18 and Austin Pickle added 13. Slater Stringer knocked down 17 points to lead the Wildcats and JaMyes Thompson added 12. SGA improved to 11-7 on the year and the Wildcats fell to 2-13.
At Monroe High School, the 8th-ranked Golden Tornadoes blasted Cook County 87-44 to improve their season record to 13-5 and 5-0 in the region. Charleston Greene poured in 25 points and Marius Ellis scored 18 to lead Monroe.
The Cook County Lady Hornets won the girls’ game in a tight match 56-45. The loss drops the Monroe Lady Tornadoes to 5-9. Individual scorers were not available.
The Westover Patriots traveled to Cairo for a region match-up with the Syrupmakers and the boys’ took home a commanding 84-52 win while the Lady Patriots suffered their first region defeat of the year. Michael Cooper led the Patriots with 21 points. Michael Isler poured in 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while AJ Jackson scored 13 points and doled out 10 assists. Jordan Brown added 10 points for the Patriots, swiped the ball for six steals and handed out 10 assists. The win evens the Westover region record at 4-4 and 7-8 overall.
The Lady Syrupmakers upset the Lady Patriots 44-35 Tuesday night in Cairo. It was the first region loss for the Lady Patriots and dropped their overall record to 13-3. It was the lowest offensive output for Westover for the third consecutive game. Information on individual scorers was not available.
Over at Deerfield Windsor, the Westfield Hornets swept two close games for the home team Knights. In the girls’ game, the Lady Hornets finished on top 59-56 after outscoring the Lady Knights 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Emma Williams led the Lady Hornets with 22 points. The Knights were led by Caroline Speir with 17 points and Emilee Foy with 15. Rachel Bonner added 10.
The Westfield Hornets hit over 50% of the three-point shots and shot over 50% from the field to edge out the Knights 70-63. Trailing by nine points in the second half, the Knights went on an 8-2 run to bring the game to within one point, but could never get over the hump. The Hornets hit free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Nick Dixon led the Knights with 19 points and Shamir Wingfield added 18 to lead Deerfield Windsor.
