Terrell County’s Jamiya McDaniel signed Wednesday with Albany Tech’s basketball program.

The four-year starter averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists. She helped the Greenwave reach the GHSA Class 1A-Public semifinals as a senior.

McDaniel was the Region 1-1A Co-Player of the Year and was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Sandy’s Spiel all-state teams.

Spring football games upcoming

Three area high schools with new football head coaches will take the field this weekend for spring games against other schools, the second year the GHSA has permitted such contests.

Led by interim head coach Frankie Carroll, Worth County heads to Schley County on Friday for a 7 p.m. scrimmage. Also Friday, Americus-Sumter hosts Southwest-Macon at 7 p.m. on Friday, with Larry Harold taking part in his first spring game as the Panthers’ head coach.

Saturday, Westover goes into its first spring game under new head coach Olten Downs with a 3 p.m. scrimmage at Dooly County.

In other action, Class 6A champion Lee County heads to Class 5A runner-up Warner Robins for a 7:30 p.m. contest May 18 at McConnell-Talbert Stadium. Also that night, Pelham heads to Clinch County for a 7 p.m. spring game.

Deerfield-Windsor hosting soccer quarterfinals

The Deerfield-Windsor girls soccer team will host Westminster at 5:30 p.m. today in a GISA girls soccer quarterfinal at Albany State’s West Campus Field.

Deerfield-Windsor reached the quarterfinals with a 5-0 victory last week over Robert Toombs, while Westminster beat Loganville Christian 4-0.

The winner plays the Frederica-Holy Spirit Prep winner at 2 p.m. on May 18 in the semifinals at Five Star Stadium in Macon.

Deerfield-Windsor’s boys will host Fugees in a quarterfinal match, with the day and time to be determined.

Terrell Academy seeking Final Four spot

The Terrell Academy baseball team hosts Brentwood at 4:30 p.m. on Friday to start their best-of-three GISA Class 2A quarterfinal series.

Terrell Academy swept Twiggs Academy 15-0 and 19-0 in the first round, while Brentwood beat Flint River 18-0 and 16-1.

The winner faces the Windsor-First Presbyterian Christian winner in the semifinals.

Baconton Charter enters quarterfinals

Baconton Charter hosts Telfair County in a GHSA Class 1A-Public baseball quarterfinal series that begins with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday.

Seeded third, Baconton Charter is coming off a 5-4, 12-3 sweep of Jenkins County. Sixth-seeded Telfair County beat Lanier County 10-0 and 4-3 in the second round.

The winner faces No. 2 seed Irwin County or No. 7 seed ECI in the semifinals.
