Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving underwent surgery on his left knee on Saturday.

The team said Irving had two screws removed from his left patella. The recovery time is estimated at four to five months.

The club stated that the procedure went well.

“The surgery went exactly as planned, and we expect Kyrie to be fully healthy for training camp in the fall,” Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge said in the team’s press release.

Irving already had been ruled out for the upcoming postseason.

Irving underwent an earlier knee surgery in March to have a tension wire removed from the kneecap. It was believed he would be able to return at some point during the postseason, but he continued to have discomfort and doctors determined that he had a bacterial infection from the screws.

Irving originally broke the kneecap during the 2015 NBA Finals when he was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Irving, who has been out since March 11, averaged 24.4 points, 5.1 assists and 3.8 rebounds in 60 games in his first season in Boston.
