Firing a 7-under-par 65 on Sunday at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif., Jon Rahm emerged with a three-shot win in the Farmers Insurance Open.
Rahm’s 13-under 275 total topped the 278s of Charles Howell and Taiwan’s C.T. Pan. Howell closed with a 68, while Pan finished with a 70.
Keegan Bradley (67), Pat Perez (70), England’s Justin Rose (70), Tony Finau (71) and third-round co-leader Patrick Rodgers (72) tied for fourth place at 279.
The other third-round co-leader, Brandt Snedeker, shot a 73 on Sunday to tie for 10th at 280. He matched Brian Harman (68), J.J. Spaun (70), Ollie Schniederjans (71) and Robert Streb (71).
Rahm turned pro last year after graduating from Arizona State. He was formerly the top-ranked amateur in the world, and he captured the Jack Nicklaus Award as the best player in NCAA Division I and the Ben Hogan Award given for academics and athletics.
Rahm tied for third last year in the Quicken Loans National, then tied for second in the RBC Canadian Open. The Farmers Insurance Open was his 17th career event on the PGA Tour, including tournaments he entered as an amateur.
After starting play Sunday with a bogey, Rahm was error-free the rest of the round. He made two birdies on the front nine, added another at No. 11, then eagled the par-5 13th hole. A birdie at No. 17 boosted his chances, and he pulled away by sinking the long putt from the back edge of the green to close his round.
Several other groups still had a chance to catch him, but his score held up.
“I saw the replay and the reaction and I don’t even remember what I did,” Rahm said. “It’s hard to explain.”
At 22 years, 2 months, Rahm became the youngest winner at Torrey Pines. Phil Mickelson was 22 years when he won what was then called the Buick Invitational of California in 1993.
Mickelson tied for 14th at 281 after shooting a 70 on Sunday.
