Lee County Trojans get in “good work” against Carver – win 29-12

LEESBURG — The Lee County Trojans saw “really good work” Friday night in a scrimmage against Carver-Columbus as they prepared for this week’s season-opener against Class 5A powerhouse Warner Robins.

“It was really good work tonight,” said Lee County head coach Dean Fabrizio. “Carver has a really good football team. They came out and took it to us early in the first quarter and we had to get settled down and get some things corrected,” the coach said. “We ended up playing pretty well. It was a really good scrimmage game for us because it pointed out a lot of things we need to get corrected. Will get back to work next week on those things.”

The Tigers jumped on the board first with a touchdown run that gave them a 6-0 first quarter lead before the Trojans responded with a 30-yard touchdown run from senior Devin Collier. The kick failed and the first quarter ended 6-6.

After Carver responded with another touchdown run, junior running back Ousmane Kromah tied the game again with a 22-yard run up the middle. The kick gave the Trojans a 13-12 lead they never lost.

Senior Braxton Honer raced 73 yards for the next touchdown in the third quarter to put the score at 19-12 and the Trojans added 10 more points in the fourth. After kicker Ryker Moye booted a 22-yard field goal, Josh Cabitat connected with freshman wide receiver Jaden Upshaw for a 29-yard touchdown pass that added six more. Ryker hit the extra point to end the scoring.

The Trojans will host Warner Robins Friday night in Leesburg to open the season. Last year, the Trojans defeated the Demons 27-10 before the Warner Robins team put things together and made it to the state championship game of Class 5A for the sixth consecutive year. They lost to Ware County 38-13 in the championship game. Kick-off Friday night is set for 7:30.
