LEESBURG — The No. 8-ranked Lee County Trojans dominated the second half of Saturday night’s game against visiting Thomas County Central and won 68-45.
The win improves the Trojan record to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the region. The Lady Trojans led early but fell to the Lady Jackets 59-52.
The Trojans jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter, but the Yellow Jackets drilled back-to-back threes in the second quarter and came within five points — 22-17. The Trojans picked up the pace to get the lead back to 10 points when Matthew Hardwick scored as the buzzer sounded to end the first half.
The Trojans pushed the lead to 17 at the end of the third when Brayden Moore slammed two points home and Jordan Houston grabbed a rebound and put in two points to end the quarter.
The only real drama in the final quarter was at the very beginning of the quarter when the two teams got very physical underneath the basket and Lee County head coach Kirven Davis objected because officials were not calling fouls. After a time-out and a discussion with officials, play resumed and the Trojans continued to pull away from the Jackets.
Moore scored 19 points to lead the Trojan offensive attack, Hardwick put in 16 and Josiah Parker added 12.
The Lady Trojans opened up on fire Saturday night, led by 10 first quarter points from Camya Hutcherson. Lee County jumped out to a 24-8 lead midway through the second quarter before the Jackets turned on their offense.
Thomas County Central’s Vesha Giddens drilled back-to-back threes to ignite the Lady Jackets and by halftime, they edged ahead 25-24. The Lady Jackets continued to score in the third quarter and pushed the lead to nine points before Hutcherson got hot again and scored three consecutive baskets to put the Lady Trojans in front 41-39.
Thomas Central took control in the final quarter with nine points from Giddens while the Lady Jackets, as a team, hit 10 of 12 fourth-quarter free throw attempts.
Hutcherson finished the night with 25 points to lead the Lady Trojans, Biyyanah Citlak put in 17 and Taliyah Porter added seven.
The Trojans will play at Veterans Tuesday in Kathleen and then travel to Thomasville to play the Jackets again on Saturday.
