Light Tuesday night basketball schedule ahead of busy weekend
By Joe Whitfield
There are no local high school basketball games for the normal Tuesday night slate of games as teams prepare for the onslaught of high school basketball tournaments in the area. But there are a few area teams playing out-of-town games and then the holiday tournaments start Thursday at Monroe here in Albany.
Westover, Deerfield Windsor, Lee County, Sherwood Academy and Byne Christian are all off Tuesday night. Westover, Deerfield and Lee County will be competing in the U-Save-It Classic later this week at Monroe. Sherwood and Byne have no scheduled games until the new year.
The Doughtery County Trojans (8-4) have now won five straight games after knocking off Lee County Saturday night in Leesburg 83-77 and will travel to Columbus Tuesday night for a region bout with Northside (5-6). After an epic battle with Westover Friday night where the Trojans came from behind to win 82-75, the Trojans got 25 points from Eric Gulley and 21 from Rod Jones to lead the Trojans past Lee County 83-77. Eleven days earlier, Lee County knocked off Dougherty 93-91 in another exciting game. After its battle with Northside, Dougherty will line up for three games in the U-Save-It Classic. It will play Colquitt County on Thursday, Statesboro on Friday and Crisp County on Saturday at Monroe.
Monroe (3-3) is also coming off of a close win in Leesburg, where it topped Lee County 68-62 last Thursday. The Golden Tornades will be in action tonight in Cuthbert when they take on Randolph-Clay (2-4). Monroe, host of the U-Save-It Classic this year, will then face Southeast Bulloch on Thursday, Glynn Academy on Friday and finish the tournament in a matchup with Deerfield Windsor Saturday night at 8:30.
The closest high school game today will be in Dawson when the Terrell Academy Eagles (3-4) host Westfield (1-3). The Eagles will then be competing in the Brookwood Christmas tournament in Thomasville and will play Valwood on Thursday.
Just south of Albany, Mitchell County (3-3) will host a region matchup with Quitman County (2-7), and Pelham (6-1) will host Webster County (3-5) at the Hornet’s Nest.
