ALBANY – The Monroe Golden Tornadoes wrestling team kicks off its season Tuesday at Westover, with head coach Lawrence Green optimistic about the potential of his squad despite its youth and limited experience. The team, which has just three seniors and five returning wrestlers, will lean heavily on senior leader Louis Cobb III.

“We only have about five wrestlers with experience,” Green said. “But I still think we can do pretty well. We’ve got 16 to 18 guys and four girls who’ve been working hard. We’re building around our senior leader, Louis Cobb III, who was a state qualifier last year.”

Cobb, who went 19-4 as a junior, is determined to return to the state tournament and bring some teammates along with him. His impact extends beyond his performance on the mat, as he’s become a mentor for Monroe’s younger wrestlers.

“Louis’ leadership in the weight room and on the mat has been invaluable,” Green said. “He comes in and works hard every day, and when he’s on the mat, he’s showing the other guys moves that can help them get out of tough situations.”

Green has high expectations for Cobb this season, predicting another strong run to the state tournament and possibly a state championship.

“This is Louis’ fourth year wrestling,” Green said. “When he came in as a freshman, he wasn’t very good,” the coach added with a laugh. “But each year he’s gotten stronger and better. Now, he’s not just competing at a high level — he’s teaching the younger guys how to succeed. He could be our state champion this year.”

Cobb won’t be alone in the spotlight, as several other wrestlers are showing promise. Green mentioned Cameron Banks, Terrell Gardner, Terrence Fowler and Ricardo Rambo as wrestlers who could also make it to state. Many team members, including Banks, Gardner, Fowler, Rambo, Jacob Bodiford, Braylen Sweets, Chance Jordan and heavyweight Rahshieke Molden, recently joined the roster after wrapping up the football season.

“We’re already seeing these guys apply what we’re teaching,” Green said. “We’ve had some practice matches, and it’s clear that even the younger, inexperienced wrestlers are picking up the techniques.”

This season’s preparation has focused heavily on conditioning and mastering fundamental moves such as takedowns and escapes.

“Conditioning is extremely important in wrestling, so that’s been a big focus,” Green said. “Since we have so many new wrestlers, we’ve also spent a lot of time on the basics. Louis’ leadership has been a big part of that.”

The Golden Tornadoes will host their first home match on 5 p.m. Dec. 5, welcoming Turner County, Sumter County and Crisp County to Albany. Monroe will also host the region tournament on Jan. 11 as the team pushes for opportunities to compete in Cairo in February and Macon in March.
