Josef Martinez scored twice, and Atlanta United overcame an early deficit to knock off the San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 on Tuesday at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.

Carlos Carmona and Anton Walkes added goals for United, and Miguel Almiron, Julian Gressel and Greg Garza had assists to help Atlanta overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

Tommy Thompson and Chris Wondolowski scored for the Earthquakes, who were reduced to 10 men for the final 65 minutes.

United was without starting goalkeeper Alec Kann, who will miss six to eight weeks with a quad injury sustained Saturday in a road win over Columbus. Kann had recorded back-to-back clean sheets, but United’s shutout streak ended quickly against San Jose.

Kyle Reynish started in goal in place of Kann and was tested early by the Earthquakes. Thompson scored in the second minute, capitalizing off a deflected ball in the Atlanta box with a top-shelf blast that gave San Jose a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta got a break in the 32nd minute, when San Jose defender Kofi Sarkodie was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the first half, leaving the Earthquakes protecting a one-goal lead with 10 men.

In the 55th minute, Martinez headed a bending, left-to-right cross from Garza that San Jose keeper David Bingham got a hand on, but the ball went right to Carmona, who finished to tie the score 1-1.

Martinez gave Atlanta its first lead just a minute later, redirecting another Garza cross past Bingham to put United up 2-1.

Wondolowski delivered the quick answer, finishing off a high cross from Nick Lima to tie the United. But Atlanta wasn’t done.

Walkes scored the go-ahead goal off a header from an 81st-minute set piece, and Martinez added the clincher in the 89th minute.

Wondolowski made his 229th career start for the Earthquakes, the most in franchise history.
