The Michigan Wolverines and head coach Jim Harbaugh officially announced the hiring of former Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain as the team’s wide receivers coach.
McElwain was 22-12 in parts of three seasons at Florida, leading the Gators to a Citrus Bowl win in his first season in 2015.
“I am excited to work with this offensive staff and Coach Harbaugh,” McElwain said in the school’s statement Tuesday. “There are a lot of great offensive minds in that coaching room and I look forward to learning from them.”
McElwain told ESPN last weekend that his duties will include coaching receivers, helping coordinate the offense and preparing the weekly game plan. He’ll be filling the position of former Wolverines wide receivers coach Dan Enos, who departed the program shortly after being hired to become Alabama’s quarterbacks coach.
McElwain was fired by Florida midway through last season after leading the team to a 3-4 start and causing a stir with controversial comments regarding previously unreported death threats his family received.
Overall, McElwain is 44-28 as a head coach, including a three-year stint at Colorado State (22-16 from 2012-14).
His coaching resume includes a run as Alabama’s offensive coordinator from 2008-11, where he helped the Crimson Tide to two national titles.
