Miami (Fla.) tight end Michael Irvin II is out four months with a knee injury.

The school announced Wednesday that Irvin is expected to undergo surgery this week. He sprained the MCL in his right knee during workouts.

Irvin was expected to see increased playing time with 2017 starter Chris Herndon gone.

A wide receiver in high school, Irvin II moved to tight end at Miami. He is the son of Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin.

Last season, Irvin II caught nine passes for 78 yards in 12 games.
