Mitchell County track and field earns second state championship

ALBANY — The Mitchell County Eagles proved that every point counts Saturday at Hugh Mills. They clinched their second consecutive state track and field championship by narrowly defeating Warren County, 54-52.
Using their depth to compete in a wide range of events, the Eagles showcased their championship pedigree with standout performances across the board.
The relay teams played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ success. The 4×800 relay team of Terrell Mathis, Jr., Willie Davis, Dre Marcus, and Patrick Wilder claimed a state championship with a first-place finish.
The 4×100 relay team, consisting of Montorie Lee, Jonathan Isom, Darius Robinson, and Khalil Murray, finished fourth. The 4×400 relay team of Patrick Wilder, Darryl Thomas, Kentorial Wimberly, and Terrell Mathis, Jr. placed sixth.
Additionally, the 4×200 relay team of Leonte Thomas, Jr., Marcus Vicks, Jonathan Isom, and Darryl Thomas secured an eighth-place spot on the podium.
Robinson and Isom made valuable contributions in the hurdles events, scoring points in both races. Robinson finished fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, with Isom right behind him in seventh.
In the 300-meter hurdles, Isom improved to a fourth-place finish, while Robinson took seventh.
In the distance events, Terrell Mathis, Jr. led early in the 1600-meter run but fell just one second short of reaching the podium. However, he showed resilience in the 800-meter run, securing fourth place for the Eagles.
Sprinter Leonte Thomas, Jr. added two points to the Eagles’ total with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash.
The Eagles also found success in the field events. KJ Cooper delivered a clutch performance in the boys’ discus, earning second place with a final throw of 156 feet, 7 inches.
Radricus Monford of Greene County edged him out for the title with a throw of 165 feet. The Eagles added more points in the discus when Jaylen Richardson placed sixth with a throw of 136 feet.
In the boys’ high jump, Dre Marcus tied for fifth place. MJ Quartman of McIntosh County Academy took the top spot with a leap of 6 feet, 4 inches.
The combination of depth and determination allowed the Eagles to edge out Warren County and secure back-to-back state championships.
