The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right fielder Yasiel Puig on the 10-day disabled list Sunday with a left hip pointer and bruised foot suffered in the first game of a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Right-hander Brock Stewart was recalled to take Puig’s roster spot.
Puig injured his hip on a collision with the padded outfield wall in the bottom of the first before fouling a ball off his foot during his at-bat in the top of the second. He was removed at the start of the bottom half of the second.
Manager Dave Roberts and Puig both indicated the foot injury was the more concerning of the two. Puig underwent X-rays, which came back negative.
Puig is hitting .193 with seven RBIs in 24 games this season. With the outfielder unavailable for Game 2 on Saturday night, the Dodgers recalled outfielder Alex Verdugo from Triple-A Oklahoma City, optioning left-handed reliever Scott Alexander to OKC in a corresponding move.
–Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani will not make his scheduled start against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday due to his lingering ankle injury. Nick Tropeano will pitch in Ohtani’s stead.
Ohtani said Saturday that he expected to be ready to pitch Tuesday after injuring his left ankle trying to beat out an infield hit against the New York Yankees on Friday night. He’s been held out of the starting lineup in the team’s two games since then.
Manager Mike Scioscia told reporters the prized 23-year-old right-hander won’t be placed on the disabled list. Ohtani’s scheduled bullpen was also pushed back and might now take place Monday.
–Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Robbie Ray departed the team’s game against the Washington Nationals due to a right oblique strain, the club announced.
Ray came up lame after throwing a pitch to Washington catcher Matt Wieters in the second inning. He called for the trainer and pointed toward his right side. After a brief discussion, the Diamondbacks pulled Ray and replaced him with left-hander T.J. McFarland.
Ray, 26, is 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA in six starts this season. He has 45 strikeouts in just 27 2/3 innings. Ray went 15-5 with a 2.89 ERA and 218 strikeouts last season when he was an All-Star for the first time in his career.
–The San Diego Padres placed right fielder Wil Myers on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left oblique prior to the team’s game against the New York Mets.
Myers departed Saturday’s game in the fifth inning after swinging and fouling off a pitch. He called for a team trainer and was clutching his left side when leaving the field. Outfielder Travis Jankowski was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to fill the roster opening.
This is Myers’ second stint on the DL this season. The 2016 All-Star earlier missed time due to nerve irritation in his right arm. Myers is batting .300 with one homer and three RBIs in 40 at-bats this season.
–The Toronto Blue Jays demoted slumping second baseman Devon Travis to Triple-A Buffalo prior to their game against the Texas Rangers.
Travis, 27, is batting just .148 with one homer and 18 strikeouts in 61 at-bats this season. Travis, who has a .282 career average in 231 games, has been unable to get going this season. Cuban rookie Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will receive most of the work at second base. The 24-year-old hit his first major league homer on Saturday and has a .240 average in 25 at-bats.
Right-hander Carlos Ramirez was recalled from Buffalo in a corresponding move.
–The Milwaukee Brewers are activating veteran left-hander Wade Miley, who will make his season debut in a Wednesday start against the Cincinnati Reds.
Miley has been out with a left groin strain he suffered near the end of spring training, and the Brewers had to decide by Sunday whether to add him to the roster or release him.
Miley, 31, was paid a $100,000 retention to stay with the organization after signing a minor league contract with the team that would have allowed him to leave as a free agent if he wasn’t on the roster coming out of spring training.
Miley is coming off three rehab starts at Double-A Biloxi, most recently striking out 11 in six scoreless innings on Friday. He endured a rough season last year when he went 8-15 with a 5.61 ERA for the Baltimore Orioles.
–The Philadelphia Phillies placed shortstop J.P. Crawford on the 10-day disabled list ahead of their matchup with the Atlanta Braves.
Crawford has a right forearm strain he suffered in a 4-1 loss to Atlanta on Saturday, saying he lost feeling in the elbow after making a throw to third in the fifth inning. Crawford, 23, said he’d felt discomfort for a few days before the injury.
He is batting just .190 on the season, but has two home runs and nine runs. Crawford has five errors already this season after not recording a single one in 21 starts last season.
