MLB roundup: Yankees win on Frazier’s walk-off homer
The Sports Xchange
NEW YORK — Clint Frazier hit a three-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and the New York Yankees rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday.
The Yankees won for only the seventh time in 24 games since June 12 when Frazier drove a 97-mph fastball from Corey Knebel (0-2) well over the left-field wall on a 1-and-0 count. Frazier quickly rounded the bases and was mobbed by his teammates at home plate.
The inning started when Didi Gregorius drew a four-pitch walk. Jacoby Ellsbury drew a one-out walk setting the stage for Frazier, who made his major-league debut last Saturday in Houston.
Aroldis Chapman (2-0) struck out the side in the ninth after Dellin Betances fanned two in the eighth. Starter Luis Severino allowed a three-run homer to Domingo Santana in the first but little else in seven innings.
Blue Jays 7, Astros 2
TORONTO — Josh Donaldson and Troy Tulowitzki hit three-run home runs, Marcus Stroman pitched seven strong innings and Toronto defeated Houston.
Stroman (9-5) allowed six hits, three walks and one run, and struck out six to earn his second win in his past five starts. The Blue Jays assured themselves of at least a split in the four-game series with the victory over the Astros, who have the best record in the American League.
Marwin Gonzalez homered for the Astros. Houston starter Mike Fiers (5-4) allowed five hits, four walks and three runs in six innings. The right-hander struck out six.
Orioles 5, Twins 1
MINNEAPOLIS — Jonathan Schoop hit a towering two-run homer, Manny Machado reached base three times and Wade Miley bounced back with a strong effort on the mound in Baltimore’s win against Minnesota.
Mark Trumbo added a solo homer for the Orioles. Machado had two hits, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI a day after his four-hit, two-homer performance on Friday as Baltimore snapped a five-game losing streak and beat Minnesota for the first time in six games this season.
Miley (4-7) earned his first win in four starts, giving up eight hits and three walks. The only blemish on his line came from a solo homer by All-Star slugger Miguel Sano. Adalberto Mejia (4-4) allowed four runs on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings for the Twins. He struck out six.
Rays 1, Red Sox 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Alex Cobb held Boston to two hits and Tampa Bay held on to edge the Red Sox.
Cobb (7-6) pitched a gem, giving up only two singles while striking out three, outdueling defending Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello. Tampa Bay is assured of a winning record at the All-Star break while Boston lost to its division rival for the second time in three days, with the series finale coming Sunday.
Cobb held the Red Sox to two hits in 7 2/3 innings — Xander Bogaerts had an infield single in the first inning, and Mookie Betts had a single up the middle in the third. From there, Cobb retired 11 batters in a row until Mitch Moreland reached on an error in the seventh.
Braves 13, Nationals 0
WASHINGTON — Starter Julio Teheran was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and pitched seven shutout innings and Nick Markakis was 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs as Atlanta crushed first-place Washington with a 15-hit outburst.
Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg (9-3), who was hit by a comebacker in the third, had his shortest outing of the year as he allowed seven hits and six runs (three earned) in three innings while not recording a strikeout for the first time in 2017.
Teheran (7-6) is now 6-0 on the road this year and 1-6 at home after he gave up just four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Markakis had an RBI single in the ninth and Matt Adams crushed a 0-2 pitch from Sammy Solis for a three-run homer to make it 13-0.
Cardinals 4, Mets 1
ST. LOUIS — Rookie shortstop Paul DeJong homered and slugged three doubles in a 4-for-4 outing as St. Louis notched a win over New York.
DeJong opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with his eighth homer, a solo shot to left-center that led off the inning against Zack Wheeler (3-6). After doubling in the fifth, DeJong led off the seventh with a double and scored on an RBI single to right by Stephen Piscotty.
Adam Wainwright (10-5) made the lead stand up with the team’s first quality start in seven games. Wainwright allowed only one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking none and fanning seven.
Padres 2, Phillies 1
PHILADELPHIA — San Diego was stymied by starter Aaron Nola for much the game but scored two runs in the seventh inning in a win over Philadelphia.
Nola (6-6) was staked to a 1-0 lead thanks to a fifth-inning solo homer by Maikel Franco. The right-hander was cruising through six innings, having thrown just 74 pitches through the shutout frames with six strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Hunter Renfroe doubled down the right-field line to start the seventh for the Padres. Carlos Asuaje laced a two-out double off the wall in right-center field to tie the game at 1-1. Austin Hedges, who homered twice in San Diego’s 4-3 win on Friday, singled home Asuaje for the eventual winning run.
