ALBANY — Tonight’s game at Hugh Mills Stadium will feature two teams looking to bounce back from tough losses in their previous games.
Felton Williams and his Albany squad fell to Westover 26-9 two weeks ago, while Monroe lost to Thomas County Central 35-7 last week.
“We came back and not only evaluated film, but also each other,” Monroe coach Charles Truitt said. “We made a number of mistakes. It was a tough loss and we did a lot of things wrong, but we will see if we can correct those mistakes this week.”
The loss to Thomas County Central was a complete change from Monroe’s opener in which they beat Westover 12-0.
If the Tornadoes (1-1) want to beat Albany, they will have to get the ball in the hands of Ulysses Williams. The big wide receiver caught both touchdown passes in Monroe’s season opener and has the ability to make a big play whenever he touches the ball.
“We know it is very important to get the ball to him,” Monroe coach Charles Truitt said. “We also understand that our opponents know we want to get it to him. All our kids will have to excel if we want to win.”
Albany coach Felton Williams knows how hard it can be to stop a playmaker like Ulysses Williams and said they will need to double cover him at some points in the game.
“You have to have somebody in his face and somebody over the top,” Felton Williams said. “You just can’t really cover him one-on-one. He will win most one-on-one battles.”
The Indians have dropped their first three games of the year but had a bye last week to try to fix some problems that have plagued them.
“We worked on tackling,” Felton Williams said. “We worked on getting better overall offensively. This will be a game that will be won up front. They are probably one of the biggest teams that we are going to see all year.”
