Monroe girls advance to region title game

COLUMBUS — The Monroe Lady Golden Tornadoes (20-6) swamped crosstown rival Dougherty 77-47 Thursday night in the semi-finals of the Region 1-AAA basketball tournament at Carver High School in Columbus.

Monroe dominated in the paint as post-players Cierra Lunsford and AaLiyah Robinson combined for 50 points — 26 for Lunsford, 24 for Robinson. Robinson also pulled down 17 rebounds. Point guard Saniyah Graham added 15 points with 10 assists in the win.

Dougherty, playing without both of their senior post players, was led by Jatiana Chambers with 19 points and four assists. D’Asia Simmons scored 12 and Amiyah Jackson added 10.

Monroe will now battle Carver (17-9) Friday night in Columbus for the region championship. Dougherty (13-12) will play Thomasville in the battle for third place in the region.
