ALBANY — The Monroe Lady Tornadoes (21-7) breezed into the Sweet 16 of the girl’s Class AAA state playoffs Tuesday with a big win over Jackson (13-13) by a 53-27 final.

Monroe’s defense and speed led by Cierra Lunsford and Saniyah Graham quickly built a 15-0 lead and by the middle of the second quarter, Monroe was up 23-5 and was never seriously threatened.

Lunsford led the scoring with 31 points — more than the entire Jackson team combined. She also grabbed 13 rebounds. Senior AaLiyah Robinson scored 13 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

Monroe is waiting on their next opponent to play. Cross Creek (22-4) was scheduled to play Savannah Country Day School (21-4) Wednesday night in Augusta.
