ALBANY — After three days of intense competition, the state track meet is complete and state champions for Class A, Class AAA and Class AAAA were crowned at Hugh Mills Stadium.
The AAAA state champions crowned Saturday were the Chapel Hill girls and the St. Pius boys. GAC won the AAA girls and Jefferson took the top honors for AAA boys. In Class A, Gordon Lee took top girls’ honors and Commerce finished first for the boys.
Monroe’s Golden Tornadoes fell short of a repeat as Greater Atlanta Christian outscored Monroe 109 — 84. In Saturday’s final competitions, Great Atlanta Christian took home top honors in both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, the 100 meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles, the 400-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash. The Golden Tornadoes took only one top spot Saturday and that was a miracle, come from behind effort by Camille Milledge in the 800 meter run.
The Golden Tornadoes did take second place in both the 4×100 relay and the 4×400 relay. The 4×100 team was comprised of Mikendy Edwards, Camille Milledge, Nia Harris, and J’Milya Poole. The 4×400 team was Milledge, Harris, Poole and Jakeyla Shealy.
Milledge and Poole took second and third, respectively, in the 300-meter hurdles and Edwards raced to second place in the 100-meter dash and then third in the 200-meter dash. Nia Harris took eighth in the 400-meter dash.
Monroe’s boys’ team finished tied for fourth overall behind Jefferson, Liberty County and Westminster. They tied with Hart County.
Kason Jones took home the state championship for the Tornadoes in the 400-meter dash and teammate Darnell Green was close behind in fourth place. Jones also raced to fifth in the 200-meter dash.
Monroe freshman Dominic Henderson finished third in the high jump for the Tornadoes and fourth in the triple jump.
Monroe’s 4×100 team of Jones, Lorranger Russell, Jacob Daniel and Henderson finished sixth in the state.
Westover’s Chastity Pickett took home two state titles in the hurdles, winning both the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Westover’s Myles McCoy took third in the 110-meter hurdles and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Westover’s girls finished sixth overall in the team standings and the boys landed in ninth overall.
