ALBANY — For the second consecutive night, the Monroe defense stepped up to earn a victory.

This time against Albany High.

The Tornadoes allowed 44 points in the game and held the Indians to under double digits each of the first three quarters on their way to a 62-44 win Saturday night at Monroe.

“That is really what has been keeping us in it is our defense,” Monroe coach Marquis Davis said. “Points off turnovers and things like that. Right now, we are still turning the ball over on the offensive end, but thanks to our defense, they have been helping us.”

After going up 14-9 in the first quarter, Monroe slowly added to the lead for the rest of the game until it was 42-24 at the end of the third quarter.

Albany briefly cut the lead to under 15 in the fourth quarter, but Monroe held on for the victory.

The win gives Monroe back-to-back home wins against Americus-Sumter and now Albany.

“This is one of the toughest regions I have ever coached in,” Davis said. “To get two back-to-back wins against two region teams. I think it is a good weekend for us.”

Monroe’s Emershaun Offord led the game in scoring with 19 points, 10 of which came in the first quarter. Trentavious Jackson added 14 for the Tornadoes.

Albany had no scorers in double digits.

Davis said it isn’t hard to get the players ready for a game against any of the Dougherty County schools.

“If you can’t get pumped for Westover, Dougherty or Albany, then you aren’t going to get pumped for anything,” Davis said.

Monroe girls 83, Albany 17

The Monroe girls came out on Saturday night looking to avenge a 34-point loss from the previous night against Americus-Sumter.

They did just that.

The Lady Tornadoes beat Albany to finish off their game of home back-to-backs with a victory.

Stevie Stallworth led the way for Monroe, scoring 26 points. She put up 17 of those points in the first half including five treys. She was the leading scorer in the game.

“She stepped up,” Monroe coach Jennifer Acree said. “She shot the ball extremely well. She is the heart and soul of our team, so anytime she does well shooting that ball, we get a big boost.”

Lynsey Washington and Toddriana Isler both finished with 10 points each for Monroe.
