Monroe-Westover rivalry headlines Week 3 slate
Lee County takes on another strong non-region opponent
By Ron Seibel
With two weeks of high school football in the books, some storylines are developing.
Monroe, with veteran quarterback David Dillard under center, is showing that it can score a bunch of points. Pelham, too, has scored a bunch with third-year starting quarterback Kendrick Patterson, with the added benefit of back-to-back shutouts from the Hornets’ defense.
Baconton Charter, Deerfield-Windsor and Southland won their openers, sitting at 1-0 heading into Week 3.
And Lee County? Well, the powerhouse that won a state championship last year in GHSA Class 6A continues to power forward with two sizable wins early on.
Here’s a look at this week’s games (all 7:30 p.m. kickoffs Friday, unless noted):
The big one: Westover (0-1) vs. Monroe (2-0).
For those who pay attention to series histories, a lot will be riding on the first leg of this year’s Albany city series.
Monroe, which has scored 98 points in its first two games, is looking for its first 3-0 start since 2010, when it opened with wins over Terrell County, Northeast-Macon and Albany High.
Westover, which was off in Week 2 following a close Week 1 loss at Cook, is looking to snap a four-game losing streak against the Tornadoes.
The key matchup likely will be Dillard, whose dual-threat capability was key in wins over Jordan and Terrell County, against Westover outside linebacker Jamie Pettway, who is drawing interest from SEC and ACC programs.
Second on the list: Peach County (1-0) at Lee County (2-0).
Lee County continues to build toward its monster Region 1-6A schedule with a home game against last year’s Class 3A runner-up.
The Lee County defense put up another strong showing in Saturday’s 35-3 win over Dr. Phillips of Orlando, Florida, holding the Florida Class 8A champion to 31 yards of total offense a week after holding Dougherty to minus-70 in the Hamp Smith Classic.
Peach County, meanwhile, opened its season Saturday in the Macon Touchdown Club Middle Georgia Kickoff Classic with a statement win, with the No. 4 team in the Georgia Sports Writers Association Class 3A poll clipping Class 6A No. 3 Northside-Warner Robins 27-24 in a game played at Five Star Stadium in Macon.
Lee County head coach Dean Fabrizio was on Chad Campbell’s coaching staff at Peach County prior to taking the Lee County head coaching position.
Another notable one: Sherwood Christian (0-2) at Pataula Charter (0-2).
A GICAA team looking to claim its first win since 2014 goes up against a third-year GHSA varsity charter school program as Sherwood Christian and Pataula Charter meet for the first time in Edison.
Sherwood has lost 29 straight games since winning the 2014 GICAA title. But the Eagles have put up competitive showings in their first two games this season, losing 42-20 to Aucilla Christian of Monticello, Florida, and 27-14 to Rocky Bayou Christian of Niceville, Florida.
Pataula Charter, meanwhile, is looking to post its first win against a team other than Cross Keys, a team Pataula plays a home-and-home series with every year as part of a non-region schedule.
Also of note: Two unbeaten teams meet Thursday at Centennial Stadium in Camilla when Baconton Charter (1-0) hosts Pelham (2-0) in a GHSA Region 1-1A contest … In action Friday, Worth County (0-2) faces a big test with Class 7A Tift County (1-1), which beat Class 6A No. 4 Valdosta 24-10 last Friday, visiting … Mitchell County (0-1), which was off last week after opening with a loss to Brooks County, returns to action with a Friday home game against Chattahoochee County (1-1) … Terrell County (0-2) hosts Miller County, which opens its season this week … Calhoun County (0-1) heads to Seminole County (0-1) following a season-opening loss to Schley County.
