NHL notebook: Capitals ink Oshie to eight-year deal

Washington Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie signed an eight-year, $46 million contract, the team announced on Friday.
Oshie recorded career highs in goals (33) and plus/minus rating (plus-28) to go along with 23 assists in 68 games last season for the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Capitals.
The former U.S. Olympic hero also contributed in the playoffs, scoring four goals and setting up eight others in 13 postseason games as Washington advanced to the second round before succumbing to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.
“Couldn’t be happier to resign with the @Capitals!!” the 30-year-old Oshie wrote on Twitter. “Great city, great organization and even more important great people.”
Oshie has collected 107 points (59 goals, 48 assists) in 148 career contests in Washington.
–The Chicago Blackhawks traded three-time Stanley Cup champion defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson to the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for defenseman Connor Murphy and forward Laurent Dauphin.
Hjalmarsson, 30, played his entire 10-year career with Chicago and was a member of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championship teams in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
Murphy, 24, notched two goals and a career-high 15 assists in 77 games last season. In 258 career NHL games, he has 13 goals and 36 assists.
Dauphin, 22, has skated in 32 career games in the NHL over the last two seasons with Arizona, scoring three goals with an assist. Last year, he split time between Arizona and the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League.
–The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forwards Artemi Panarin and Tyler Motte and a sixth-round pick in the 2017 NHL draft from the Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brandon Saad, goaltender Anton Forsberg and a fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft.
Panarin, 25, recorded 151 points (61 goals, 90 assists) and 53 penalty minutes in two seasons with the Blackhawks, including 17 power-play goals and 12 game-winners in 162 career NHL games. This past season, he racked up 74 points (31 goals, 43 assists) and 21 penalty minutes.
Motte, 22, split his rookie pro season in 2016-17 between Chicago and the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs. He notched four goals, three assists and 14 penalty minutes in 33 games with the Blackhawks. He added 10 goals, six assists and 20 penalty minutes in 43 outings with Rockford.
Saad, 24, joined the Blue Jackets via trade with the Blackhawks in June 2015. He collected 106 points (55 goals, 51 assists) and 22 penalty minutes in 160 games with the Blue Jackets and represented the club at the 2016 NHL All-Star Game.
–The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Anthony DeAngelo and the seventh overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for center Derek Stepan and goaltender Antti Raanta, the teams announced.
Stepan, 27, recorded 55 points (17 goals, 38 assists) and 16 penalty minutes in 81 games with the Rangers last season.
Raanta, 28, was 16-8-2 record in 30 games with the Rangers last season with four shutouts, a 2.26 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. His 2.26 GAA ranked ninth among qualified NHL goaltenders and his four shutouts were tied for the 10th-most despite playing in only 30 games.
DeAngelo, 21, split this past season between the Coyotes and the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League. He skated in 39 NHL games with Arizona in 2016-17, registering five goals, nine assists and 37 penalty minutes. He played in 25 AHL games, recording three goals, 13 assists and 31 penalty minutes.
–The Los Angeles Kings bought out the contract of defenseman Matt Greene, who was part of the team’s two Stanley Cup victories.
The 34-year-old Greene had one year remaining on his player contract. He played for the Kings in the past nine seasons.
The buyout will result in a cap charge of approximately $833,333 for the 2017-18 season and the 2018-19 season.
Limited to 26 games this past season due to injury, Greene was still named the recipient of the Ace Bailey Memorial Award (Most Inspirational Player) as voted by his teammates for the sixth time.
–Jack Capuano, former head coach of the New York Islanders, joined the Florida Panthers as associate coach on Bob Boughner’s new staff.
Capuano, 50, spent over a decade in the New York Islanders’ organization serving as head coach (2010-17) and assistant coach (2005-06).
As head coach of the Islanders, Capuano owned a 227-192-64 record and made three playoff appearances including the club’s 2013 postseason berth, their first since the 2007 playoffs. His 227 victories are second on the Islanders’ all-time list behind Hall of Fame coach Al Arbour.
–The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Kris Russell to a four-year contract extension.
Financial details were not released by the team, but TSN reported the deal is worth $16 million and contains a modified no-trade clause.
Russell, 30, appeared in 68 games with the Oilers last season, posting one goal, 12 assists and 23 penalty minutes. He led the NHL with 213 blocked shots and also recorded 67 hits. He averaged 21:13 minutes of ice time per game, ranking third on the team.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Russell led the league in blocked shots two of the past three seasons and finished second in the NHL in 2015-16. He also led the league with 283 blocked shots in 2014-15. On March 6, 2015, Russell set an NHL record with 15 blocked shots in one game against the Boston Bruins.
–The Blue Jackets signed center Alex Broadhurst to a one-year, two-way NHL/AHL contract extension through the 2017-18 season.
Broadhurst, 24, posted 11 goals, 14 assists and 23 penalty minutes in 52 games with the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters this past season. He finished tied for seventh on the team in goals, assists and points (25).
The Orland Park, Ill., native owns 120 points (43 goals, 77 assists) and 73 penalty minutes in 216 career AHL games with the Monsters and Rockford IceHogs. He also has recorded three goals, 10 assists and eight penalty minutes in 24 career AHL playoff games, including three goals and nine assists in 17 contests to help the Monsters capture the 2016 Calder Cup.
