Reigning Australian Open champion and No. 2 seed Caroline Wozniacki fell to 14th-seeded Russian Daria Kasatkina on Monday, 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the fourth round of the French Open in Paris.

Wozniacki’s loss wrapped up as 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams was forced to withdraw from the tournament with a pectoral injury before her anticipated match with 28th-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova.

Kasatkina, 21, is through the Round of 16 and into the quarterfinals of a major for the first time in her career. Tenth-seeded American Sloane Stevens awaits Kasatkina in a match scheduled for Wednesday.

The Danish Wozniacki appeared to be rattled by the change in court before the match, from Suzanne-Lenglen to Philippe-Chatrier.

“The slower the surface … the better it is for her,” Wozniacki said after her match. “She has very good hands and good angles and everything, so I think that suits her. I honestly didn’t think I played badly this morning. She didn’t miss one ball, and she was playing very close to the lines. I was trying what I could, but it just wasn’t enough today.”

Williams’ walkover loss to Sharapova was her first ever in a Grand Slam. Serena Williams and Venus Williams were eliminated from doubles competition on Sunday.

Top-seeded Romanian Simona Halep also played on Philippe-Chatrier, but had no problem in dispatching Belgian 16th seed Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 in just 59 minutes.

“I was a bit nervous at the start of the match but I played my best match here at Roland Garros,” Halep said. “I need to be more aggressive and try to finish the points because I don’t hit so many winners.

“I don’t have that much power, but if I play fast I feel like I improve a little bit more in my game, and that’s the plan. But you have also to adjust yourself to the opponents when they are playing different, like today, or like someone that is defending better.”

German 12th seed Angelique Kerber also moved on to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, drawing a matchup with Halep.

In Monday’s final match, Spanish third-seed Garbine Muguruza advanced after Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko was forced to retire after just two games with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Muguruza will face Sharapova in the quarterfinals, with the winner meeting either Halep or Kerber in the semifinals.
