EDISON, Ga. — The No. 3 — ranked Calhoun County Cougars are still a week away from opening day for the new basketball season but hopes and expectations are high for a returning group that reached the Elite Eight last season and put together a 21-5 season.

Only two players graduated from last year’s team and the Cougars have only two seniors this year. The bulk of the returners (seven) are juniors.

“I’ve always believed that by the junior year, you’ve figured out what kind of player you are,” said Calhoun County head coach Marcus Shaw. “These guys have been together and in our program since middle school so they know our plans and expectations.”

Shaw’s Cougars play a fast, physical game of basketball that relies on speed, tenacity, and three-point shooters that can drain the nets from all over the court.

“We are going to continue the same script,” said Shaw. “We should be better just because of another year of experience and more maturity than we had a year ago. These guys know what is expected and they work hard to improve each day.”

The Cougars are loaded with outside shooters who can hit threes from all over the court, including pre-season All-State shooting guard Jasiyah Suber. Inside the paint, junior Amajion Figgins is more physical and looking to dominate underneath for the Cougars.

The Cougars will play a challenging schedule with some of Georgia’s highest-ranked basketball teams on top of a tough region one that also includes No. 5- ranked Mitchell County, Seminole County, and an always tough Terrell County team. Mitchell County comes to Edison on December 9th and No.5- ranked Dougherty (AAA) will come to Edison on December 12. The Cougars will also host top-ranked Christian Heritage and No. 2-ranked Portal during the Calhoun County Christmas Power Classic on December 22nd and 23rd.

The Cougars open the season on December 1st at home against region foe Miller County.
