LEESBURG – There were no surprises in Leesburg Saturday night in the region contests between Lee County and Tift County. The No. 6-ranked Trojans breezed to a 56-27 win over the visiting Blue Devils after the No. 6-ranked Tift County Lady Blue Devils drubbed the Lee County girls 57-19.
The boy’s game was competitive early, though Lee County Coach Kirven Davis used some senior starters who normally don’t start since it was senior night. Seniors Brandon Blue and Bryce Fortson joined the starting five, as well as Kani Lassiter, who is the Trojans’ only senior starter. The Trojans led just 24-16 at the half.
Lee County (20-3) opened things up in the third quarter with three straight baskets from Josiah Parker, followed by back-to-back threes from Braylon Chaney, and then an underhanded move from Trecori Green for two points that brought Lee County fans to their feet. Green missed the free throw that followed but the Trojans had moved to a 41-18 lead as the end of the third quarter neared.
The fourth quarter was rest time for Lee County’s main scorers, and the reserves saw extensive playing time.
Parker was the only Trojan in double figures with 13 points as 12 different players recorded points.
The Lady Blue Devils from Tift County (20-4) wasted no time jumping on the Lady Trojans. They led 17-2 early in the game and took a 33-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. Despite the big lead, Tift County didn’t let up, including putting on a full-court press with a 45-9 lead and the Lady Trojans struggled to get the ball into the hoop.
Caitlyn Burgess poured in 23 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils, Mya Cushion scored 15 and Jalaya Miller added nine.
Camya Hutchinson led the Lady Trojans with nine points.
Lee County will host Veterans Tuesday night for the final regular season home game of the year. Tift County is likely to host the region tournament this year with the top girl’s team in the region hosting and the Lady Blue Devils have a slight edge over Veterans.
