No. 8 Washington has suspended standout linebacker Azeem Victor for Friday night’s season opener at Rutgers because of a violation of team rules, coach Chris Petersen announced Monday.

Victor, who has been selected to various preseason All-American teams, earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors last season, despite missing the final four games because of a broken leg. He made 67 tackles in 10 games.

Victor, a senior, is rated as the 57th-best pro prospect for the 2018 draft by NFLDraftScout.com.

Victor and Keishawn Bierria are returning starters at linebacker for a Washington defensive front seven that has standouts Vita Vea and Greg Gaines on the line.

Petersen also announced that sophomore defensive back Austin Joyner has been suspended for two games due to a violation of team rules. Joyner has been competing in a new-look secondary — three Washington defensive backs were selected in the second round of the 2017 draft.

Washington plays Montana at home in the second week.
