PELHAM — It has been almost two weeks since the Pelham Hornets took the court for competition after losing in the region championship game against Calhoun County. The Hornets got a first-round bye for the state playoffs and the preparation time must have been beneficial.

The seventh-ranked Pelham Hornets (23-5) are moving onto the Elite Eight and will get another shot at top-ranked and unbeaten Calhoun County after they defeated fourth-ranked Terrell County 64-46 in the second round of the state playoffs Thursday night in Pelham.

Pelham held a slight 30-29 halftime lead, but in the second half the Hornets outscored the Greenwave 34-17 and took the win. The Greenwave scored only five fourth-quarter points. The Hornets had beaten Terrell County in the semifinals of the Region 1-A tournament after the Greenwave had beaten the Hornets earlier in the season.

Darrell Starling led the Hornets with 19 points and Ke’Monterius Boyd added 13 for the winners.

Recardo Simmons led the Greenwave with 14 points and Eshaun Harvey scored 13. The loss ends the Greenwave season with a 22-6 record.

The Hornets will travel to Edison to take on the unbeaten Cougars either Tuesday or Wednesday night in the Elite Eight.
